Local barbecue winner will qualify for world champs

MARION — The World Food Championships has announced that the Southern Pride Invitational will be an automatic qualifying event to its second annual culinary competition in Las Vegas.

At the conclusion of the Southern Pride Invitational, which is June 14-16 at Black Diamond Harley Davidson in Marion, the grand champion will be presented with the official golden ticket invitation to compete at the World Food Championships this fall.

The barbecue competition will allow 49 teams the chance to win a prize purse of $10,000 and a trip to the World Food Championships in Las Vegas.

“The opportunity for the Southern Pride Invitational to send their champion to the World Food Championships is a testament to its status and prestige as a growing event in the competitive food field,” Mike McCloud, president and CEO of Trybe Targeting, producers of the World Food Championships, said in a news release.

The second annual World Food Championships is inviting champions from the world’s biggest and best food competitions and online recipe contests into a single food competition for a piece of the $300,000 prize.

In 2013, the World Food Championships will be a tournament-style competition inclusive of several rounds leading to the all-defining moment at the Final Table where the champions from the seven competing categories will vie for the ultimate World Food Champ title.

Southern Pride Wood Burning BBQ Pits & Smokers, Pepsi Mid-America, Gorilla Grid Media, the city of Marion, Williamson County and its proud sponsors will present the inaugural Southern Pride Invitational. Black Diamond Harley-Davidson will host the three-day event, which will consist of a Friday and Saturday night concert, the barbecue competition and a CBR rodeo event.
