COMPETITION OVERVIEW
NOVEMBER 1-3, 2012
LAS VEGAS, NEVADA

2012 World Burger Champion
Jason Stucki (Lucky 13)

Jason Stucki (Lucky 13)In 1995, firefighters Ron Lay and Jason Stucki were stationed together on the west side of Salt Lake City. After spending many years fighting fires, traveling, and creating & eating meals together, in 2003 they bought a little tavern in Downtown Salt Lake City and started serving the best wings the city had ever seen. Within months, the business quickly outgrew them, and bartender Rob Dutton took over the reins.

Lucky 13 is now a bustling roadhouse with a huge patio and lots of character. With a focus on using fresh, local ingredients in their made-from-scratch American dishes, they have become famous for their signature gourmet burgers, sandwiches and salads, as well as their house-smoked bacon, fresh-roasted chilies and innovative Sunday brunch.

The three of them had the same passion- the love of simple, quality ingredients prepared perfectly to create unique dishes with bold flavors. And while there were plenty of high-end restaurants, mediocre diners and a ton of fast food places, it was difficult to find an amazing hamburger.

Lucky 13 qualified for the 2012 World Food Championships by being named City Weekly's (Salt Lake City) Best Burger of Salt Lake City 2012.

In anticipation of the 2012 World Burger Championship presented by A.1.® Steaksauce, Jason Stucki notes that they experimented with the iconic condiment in burger recipes.

“A.1. has a strong flavor,” said Stucki. “It is good mixed with ground meat prior to cooking. It’s also really good as an added sauce combined with specific types of cheeses.”

The key to success for Lucky 13 was marrying A.1. with onions.

“It really shines when added to cooked onions,” said Stucki. “Caramelized onions and finished with A.1. is delicious. I personally like to caramelize the onions in butter and salt; then finish them with some A.1. on a little higher heat to thicken and lightly caramelize the A.1.”

Lucky 13 won the World Burger Championship and, as runner-up, finished just one vote shy of the World Food Championship.
